this was my first ever camcorder, this model dropped in price and can be picked up for around $200-300.
As mentioned in many online reviews the color is very accurate, but issues with low light. I never had to shoot in low light, but I did purchase a Bescor MX-601 light kit for $90 that fits on the hotshoe (get the 40w version with 2 20w bulbs is good enough to film an outside patio scene with approx 15-20ft max clarity NOT on zero lux setting which is very choppy but actually using the regular outdoor low light setting.
Also, because this cam uses miniDV, suggest getting the Panasonic Master series tapes or other high quality tapes and stick to one brand. there has been issues of switching miniDV tape brands and getting residue buildup on the heads. If this happens, there are minidv head cleaning kits that should fix this up (getting a lot of dropped frames during playback). I like the big heavy feel, other smaller HDDs are light, but this I believe adds to a lot of camera shake. Oh did I mention the image stabilization is super. You will be happy with this cam.

This camcorder has many features to desire and can be used for everyday use in many conditions. This is the second camcorder I’ve had in this range and am really pleased with it. The only negative thing about it is the low resolution still camera functionality it has at 3.1 MP. Otherwise a great buy with good clarity, saturation, optical zoom and features.

I had 2 big vacations planned for 2004 and was looking for an affordable entry in the digital camcorder market that would produce decent results. This Panasonic more than filled the bill. Video quality was outstanding and using Pinnacle Studio I was able to easily edit raw material in to some entertaining footage backed by music and other effects. The output really exceeded my expectactions as a relative newcomer to the “movie world”.

I have been using panasonic camcorders since the last 6 years. I have found the Panasonic pvgs29 to be very impressive. I wanted an economical camcorder that had a high optical zoom (very important - not digital zoom) and this was the right piece. I often use it for family videos and i am impressed with the video quality that this camcorder produces. It comes with a AV cable that i use to connect to TV and watch…awesome clarity in my 1080i TV. If you are looking for a not so expensive that give great recording quality there is no looking further.

Customer Review: Great Camera
I have had this camera for about 2 months and to date it has been great with a couple of little niggles.

I have captured footage outdoors in fairly bright light and have to say that the performance has been far superior to my old analogue camera, the picture is clearer, the colours are heaps,heaps better, in fact the picture excellent all round. The 3ccd makes the difference. The sound is not the best, but not bad either, the zoom mic is a waste of space IMO. The sound from the close surroundings is good. So if high quality pictures/footage is what you after and you plan to edit on PC where you can add/clean up the sound then I would highly reccomend this product.

I have downloaded footage to my PC via firewire with no problems (winXP) and used USB to transfer stills, all very easy.

The manual is only satisfactory, but there is so much help on the internet I have not a problem to date, just post on a forum if you can’t figure it out.

Overall a great product.
Customer Review: Beware Panasonic Service Rip-Off—STAY AWAY!!
As the owner of a very similar Panasonic digital camcorder (the PV-DV702), all I have to say is that when everything is working well, this is a great camcorder.

Negatives:

(1) The heads on these mini-DV digital camcorders are so sensitive that any microscopic particles on the heads will cause the digital image to break-up–usually at the worst possible time. Constantly cleaning the heads with a head-cleaning tape becomes a joke after a while (and I baby my camcorders like no one else I know).

(2) Panasonic service is a total rip-off. Only ONE (1) place in the entire USA is authorized to repair or clean your digital camcorder–the Panasonic Factory Service center in Elgin, IL.!! They use a FLAT RATE to service ANY Panasonic model digital camcorder. I found this out when my Panasonic digital camcorder began eating all my tapes, including brand new Sony tapes (head cleaning had absolutely no effect). Since it was just out of warranty, I called Panasonic to be told that it will cost nearly $300 (flat rate) for them to service it–even if all it needs is a de-magnetizing of the heads!!! TOTAL RIP OFF! I called Panasonic customer service to complain, and a head honcho was supposed to call me back–of course no one ever called me back.

Sony also has flat rate pricing for repair, but at about 30% less than Panasonic. To the best of my knowledge, JVC’s rates are based on hourly charges.

(3) You have to use the digital camcorder as a PLAYER that patches into your TV using patch cords–further dirtying and wearing out the heads! Brilliant engineering.

**What I did: my Panasonic digital camcorder is now a paperweight. I purchased a JVC VHS-C (analog of course!) model GR-SXM260u camcorder from Amazon, and it was the best move I made! It was 1/4 the price of the Panasonic digital camcorder, and I have no-fuss recording (no more prima-donna digital heads) that is RELIABLE and I just pop it into the included VHS tape adapter and pop that into the VCR to watch. Gee, what was I thinking when I bought the Panasonic digital camcorder???

Sheeple who enjoy getting ripped-off will like this product from Panasonic.

It’s an ok camera. For what I wanted, it worked. I was just wanting something that would record video better than my camera phone, and therefore it did the job nicely. If you want better picture quality, less noise, better dynamic range and the ability to add a mic, then look elsewhere. But if you just want a camera for quick captures that doesn’t cost an arm and leg, then this camera will do just that.

Customer Review: Panasonic MiniDV is useless!
Although this camcorder is loaded with features, there is no software available to download videos. Windows cannot even recognize the unit as a capture device except for downloading of still photos, the only software that comes with the product. For that, one can just buy a digital still camera. For video, it is useless!

I bought this item used after a lot of research, and it was a bit of a gamble. After all, there’s not a lot of info on it, as it seemed that it probably was only around for a year, and it was not an expensive camera at the time, but a somewhat budget 1-ccd camcorder.
